Southfield, Mich. –Brooks Kushman Senior Attorney Hope Shovein has been named Chair of the State Bar of Michigan Intellectual Property Law Section at the 43rd Annual Intellectual Property Law Institute, which ran from July 20-22, 2017 at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Brooks Kushman Of Counsel David Berry is the outgoing Chair of the Section. Brooks Kushman Shareholder Kristin Murphy is also concluding a 6-year run on the IP Section’s Executive Council.
The Intellectual Property Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan provides education, information and analysis about laws and procedures pertaining to federal and state IP laws through a variety of activities including meetings, seminars and publication of a newsletter.
As Chair of the 1200+ member section, Shovein will oversee the section and its various event. Shovein has served on the IP Section’s Executive Council since July 2013. Shovein previously served as Chair of the State Bar of Michigan’s Young Lawyers Section, 2013-2014, and on the State Bar of Michigan Board of Commissioners, 2012-2015.
Shovein focuses her practice on the procurement and enforcement of trademark right. Her work encompasses managing domestic and international trademark portfolios; trademark clearance searches and opinions; drafting and negotiating agreements; preparing and responding to cease and desist letters; and representing clients in opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. She has been listed as a Michigan Super Lawyer for intellectual property from 2013-2017 and was named a Michigan Super Lawyer Rising Star from 2011-2012. Michigan Lawyers Weekly named her as an “Up & Coming Lawyer” in 2010 and one of its “Women in the Law” in 2016. Ms. Shovein has also served on various committees within the International Trademark Association. She speaks and publishes regularly on IP-related topics.
