SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Brooks Kushman shareholder Christopher Smith will speak at the Intellectual Property Owners (IPO) Association 48th Annual Meeting hosted virtually on September 21-24, 2020. This will be Smith’s third time in four years presenting at this conference.
Smith’s panel titled, “Identifying and Avoiding Obstacles While Preparing Supplier Agreements,” the speakers will navigate the complex IP issues that arise during the negotiation, execution, and later litigation of supplier agreements. Each speaker will represent a different viewpoint of the agreement (i.e., buyer, seller, litigator) as the panel discusses several key aspects of supplier agreements.
Smith concentrates his practice on intellectual property litigation, with a primary emphasis on patent litigation. In addition to litigation, Smith is involved with the preparation of invalidity and infringement opinions and licensing disputes. He is also Vice Chair on the IPO Association IP Licensing Committee, and Second Vice President for the Michigan Intellectual Property Law Association.
Smith has represented clients from Fortune 500 companies, to start-ups and individual inventors in a variety of industries. He is experienced in a wide range of technologies including: (1) automotive, including infotainment; (2) medical devices; (3) internet, including content delivery networks; and (4) telecommunications, including fiber optics. His experience in patent prosecution has helped him better understand the process of obtaining a patent, including analyzing file histories, which has been invaluable to him during litigation, especially in formulating claim construction and invalidity positions.
The IPO Association is a trade association for owners of patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets. IPO is the only association in the U.S. that serves all intellectual property owners in all industries and all fields of technology. Established in 1972, the organization is composed of about 200 companies and more than 12,000 individuals.
