SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Brooks Kushman Shareholder Hope Shovein presented at a recent Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE) seminar, “Basic Trademark and Patent Practice for Lawyers and Paralegals,” designed for attorneys to learn the nuts and bolts of IP law with practical advice from Michigan’s top patent and trademark lawyers.
Hope’s presentation titled, “Trademark Prosecution: Analyzing, Registering, and Maintaining Trademarks,” discussed the basics of trademark prosecution. This included understanding the trademark life cycle, types of trademarks, what to do before you file, tips to avoid office actions, dealing effectively with trademark examiners, and post-registration maintenance.
Hope has over 20 years of trademark experience. She manages trademark portfolios for multi-national companies, and develops trademark strategies, including clearance, protection, and enforcement. She also counsels on brand protection that includes C&D programs, social media take-downs, and enforcement at Customs. Hope handles complaints under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, ICANN’s Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy, and other dispute resolution policies. She specializes in helping clients enforce their rights in any medium, including the unauthorized use of trademarks and copyright protected material.
