Southfield, Mich. – Brooks Kushman is pleased to announce that shareholder Michael Turner has been named to the 2021 Class of “Leaders in the Law” by Michigan Lawyers Weekly.

The Leaders in the Law are recognized and honored for significant accomplishments or achievements in law practice, outstanding contributions to the practice of law in Michigan, leadership in improving the justice system in Michigan, seeking improvements to the legal community and their communities at large, and setting an example for other lawyers.

“Mike could not be more deserving of this honor,” says CEO Sangeeta Shah, “Mike is an engaged and dynamic leader within our firm as well as in the legal and local community. With his characteristic attention to detail and deep understanding of the patent prosecution practice, Mike has mentored scores of our associates, giving them the know-how and confidence to reach their full potential. He exemplifies the traits that we value in leadership.”

Michael Turner focuses his practice on domestic and foreign patent prosecution for mechanical matters, electromechanical matters, systems, business methods, and designs. His industry background in robotics and automation provides him with experience in various technologies and manufacturing processes, which he utilizes to protect his client’s intellectual property rights. Turner also counsels clients on procedures for filing domestic patent applications that meet the varying requirements for both domestic and international protection, particularly addressing the various international nuances associated with design patents.

Turner employs a collaborative approach when helping clients define and protect their intellectual property assets. Based on his 20+ years of experience, he realizes that the more input he elicits from a client offers in the early stages of patent prosecution, the stronger the resulting protection will be. He often consults with management and corporate counsel to build an understanding between the engineers and their company’s decision-makers regarding the development, application, and potential impact of new technologies in the market and within the corporate patent portfolio. Turner’s close working relationship with clients has led him to become an extension of his clients’ teams.

Turner takes a proactive role in mentorship, training, and professional development within the firm. He has a passion for training associates. He takes the time to ensure they are up to date on new procedures, feel supported in their position, have a diverse workload, and have the necessary tools they need to be successful. He has also taken a leadership role within the firm to recruit new patent professionals to the firm. For example, he works closely with the Kettering University Career Program to encourage students to seek a career in intellectual property (IP). Over the years, he has appeared on campus to speak with students on his career path and encourage others to follow. This has led many candidates to seek a career in IP, many of whom have joined Brooks Kushman. Additionally, he works with associates and clerks to prepare continuing legal education presentations within the firm. This serves to educate attorneys at the firm on new developments of the law while also encouraging the attorneys to expand their horizons and learn new things.
