Brooks Kushman Welcomes Attorney Brett Smith

ROYAL OAK, Michigan – Brooks Kushman welcomes attorney Brett Smith back to the firm as a Patent Attorney on the patent prosecution team. With over a decade of experience in intellectual property law, Brett helps clients secure and manage domestic and international patent portfolios, conduct patentability and infringement analyses, and navigate intellectual property licensing and privacy compliance.

Brett works with clients ranging from startups to multinational corporations across industries including automotive, aviation, robotics, medical devices, and consumer electronics. His background in mechanical engineering and patent law allows him to provide practical guidance on patent preparation, prosecution, post-issuance proceedings, and intellectual property disputes.

In addition to patent prosecution, Brett has represented clients in intellectual property litigation, including patent infringement and trade secret cases. His experience in high-stakes disputes strengthens Brooks Kushman’s litigation capabilities.

Brett spent several years in Chicago, where he built relationships with clients across industries. His return to Brooks Kushman supports the firm’s future growth and commitment to expanding its presence and partnerships in intellectual property law.

Brett earned his J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law, where he was a member of the Moot Court Honor Society and received CALI Awards for Legal Writing II and Legal Rights of Children. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University and is admitted to practice in Illinois, Michigan, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and multiple federal courts.
