SOUTHFIELD, MichiganBrooks Kushman Co-Chair of Litigation John LeRoy will be participating in the upcoming Global Series panel hosted by the Federal Circuit Bar Association titled, “Global FRAND Issues: Precious Metals, Auto, and IoT” on October 20, 2021, at 10:00 AM EST.

The Global Series is a part of an on-going dialogue to address topics of global significance at a senior level of discussion. Working closely with government representatives, adjudicators, corporate leaders, litigation leaders, academics, and others in the global community, the Series responds in real time to emerging challenges. The on-going Series includes participants from Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, the Republic of Korea, the United States, the People’s Republic of China, Canada, Brazil, and other countries.

LeRoy’s panel will discuss SEP/FRAND issues from the perspective of different industry sectors. How are SEPs affecting varying industries? In the automotive industry, how have SEP issues been received and how are they affecting the automotive supply chain? How are IoT companies adapting to the SEP environment and what effects have been experienced in product development and sales? Should licensing practices be different to accommodate different industry dynamics? What can we learn from a new Chinese case involving rare earth metal processing and related industries, and FRAND for “commercially essential” patents? And finally, how are the different international perspectives on these issues developing and what are they differences?

John LeRoy has been representing the automotive industry in patent litigation matters concerning electronics and computer software for nearly 20 years. He has extensive experience dealing with wireless technology and Standard Essential Patents. He is Co-Chair of Brooks Kushman’s patent litigation department and the Chair of the firm’s standard essential patent and open source software practices.
