Brooks Kushman P.C.`s Mark A. Cantor, president, Ralph M. Burton, senior attorney, and Phyllis Golden Morey, shareholder, have been named to the “Top Lawyers in Metro Detroit” list featured in this month`s issue of DBusiness magazine. All three attorneys from the leading intellectual property (IP) and commercial law firm in Southfield, Mich. were recognized in the IP category.
Based on the 2010 Martindale-Hubbell® Peer Review Ratings™, the list honors area attorneys who received top rankings in one or several practice areas. According to DBusiness, these lawyers are deemed to possess the “highest professional ability and ethical standards.”
All three Brooks Kushman attorneys have been awarded the top rating (“AV® Preeminent™”) from Martindale-Hubbell. Lawyers with the AV distinction must have been practicing for at least three years, be in good standing in both their professional and personal lives and participate in an anonymous review process of other bar members. Cantor, a registered patent attorney and professional engineer, leads the firm`s litigation practice. He has been instrumental in the growth of Brooks Kushman locally, nationally and internationally, including the recent opening of an office in Los Angeles. In addition to Top Lawyers recognition, in the past year Cantor has been recognized as one of the 12 Power Lawyers in Michigan by Crain`s Detroit Business, named to the Super Lawyers® list in IP and honored as one of the Best Lawyers in America®. Burton is a senior attorney with Brooks Kushman and has nearly 50 years of experience in IP and trademark law. He began his practice at Burton and Parker, a law firm headed by his father, Ralph J. Burton. After the firm dissolved in the 1980`s, he moved to Brooks Kushman, where he has been since – representing several corporate and independent clients. Burton is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, ABA, American Intellectual Property Law Association and the MIPLA, of which he served as president from 1968 to 1969.
Golden Morey serves as a shareholder and chief diversity officer for Brooks Kushman. She also heads the firm`s commercial litigation where she defends contract, business torts and trade secret claims. She also represents clients in trademark and copyright infringement lawsuits and was honored as one of the “Women Worth Watching in 2006” by Profiles in Diversity Journal. She is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, American Bar Association, the National Bar Association and Federal Bar Association and is admitted to practice before the Federal Circuit and the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals.
