Jason Burnette is an experienced intellectual property attorney who focuses his practice on working with global businesses on the management of their intellectual property portfolios. Jason counsels clients on all aspects of intellectual property including trade secret, prosecution, clearance and litigation related to consumer products, mechanical, electrical, materials, power generation, telecommunication, and biomedical arts.
Jason goes above and beyond to help his clients develop and manage all aspects of their global IP protection strategy including international patent acquisition, oppositions, clearance, infringement, and IP due diligence. He has developed litigation strategies to successfully protect an IPR challenge of patent priority at the USPTO. Jason explains detailed and technical IP issues to be understood across your organization in a clear and concise manner to provide value when making decisions. He also conducts trainings related to IP and agreements for both engineering and procurement departments.
Prior to joining Brooks Kushman, Jason served as in-house counsel for a Fortune 500 multinational manufacturer of home appliances where he developed and managed all aspects of their global protection strategy for multiple business units. Jason developed IP protection strategies to protect development projects while minimizing the risk of infringement of competitors’ products while also providing IP due diligence support, and developing a global filing strategy to enable docket counsel to plan patent acquisition filings in countries that add value to the corporation.
Jason also brings years of engineering experience to his law practice as a former blackbelt, tool, and modernization process engineer. These experiences provide Jason with a vast understanding of technologies such as, metallurgy, casting and machining operations, tooling design, manufacturing processes and other drive train components such as transmissions, engine components, suspension and driveshafts, both fixed and articulating.
Previously, Jason served on the United States Navy and is a proud veteran. Jason has also always been very involved in his community. Jason has served as a volunteer for United Way of Southwest Michigan, Ironman Steelhead, and the local veterans’ organizations to name a few. He also can be found supporting his son’s soccer team or working with the local schools.
